Occlusal Waxing Using Gneuromuscular Principles

by Clayton A. Chan, DDS, MICCMO
Master, International College of Craniomandibular Orthopedics

Esthetics is often tolerant when it comes to surface textures, shapes and contours, but the Occlusion (the way teeth fit together in the mouth) is often unforgiving!  This become apparent when treating cases which have high proprioceptive occlusal awareness.

I really appreciate the fine artistry and detail that my team of technicians are able to create for my patients.  It is all possible when specific information is communicated clearly the end result in mind.  I like natural surface textures that my patients can appreciate and feel good about, especially if they are in front of TV, video cameras and who are often in the front of the public.  Natural surface textures that create proper light relections matter when addressing the cosmetic and esthetic needs of my particular patients.  Open embrasure form, soft line angles that match a proper occlusal plane and smile line are critical to how the lips move and function around these visible surfaces to enhance speach, and word pronounciations.

I love the powerful conceptual blend between gnathologics and neuromuscular principles to produce the functional and esthetics for my patients using the Gneuromuscular Occlusion concepts we teach at Occlusion Connections.  This is something brand new for many within our dental profession, but is the most cutting edge concepts that blend science with clinical dentistry.

The occlusion you see in these photos are designed specifically for one of my patients who is now neuromuscular stable.  I have been able to establish a very reproducible bite position to which I can ask my talented waxing technician (Ray Foster and Team, Las Vegas Esthetic Lab) to produce this text book quality of occlusion in an "Optimized" neuromuscular position using the Myotronics K7 Scan 4/5 Chan Scan protocol.

This is real time occlusal dentistry, not just for show, but represents what is possible when proper occlusal principles are implemented with a proper plane of occlusion that is desired by all clinicians who appreciate high quality occlusion.

A Key Concepts:
1) Establishing a stable myocentric position is possible for reproducible dentistry.
2) Anatomical form is possible when the masticatory system is neutralized.  Rat or cow chewers occlusion is no longer necessary when physiologic parameters are met.
3) Discluding principles of protective occlusion both in the anterior and posterior regions must be upheld properly to qualify as proper neuromuscular occlusion.
4) Gneuromuscular occlusion is a blend of gnathologic mechanics in a neuromuscular position - this is the best of both worlds!
